Chronic Back Pain

"I’ve had back problems for the past 30-years as a direct result of a fall. I suffered severe injury to my lower and middle back. I have utilized various forms of treatment modalities over the years under specialist advice, in an attempt to manage my condition. Treatments have varied and so has the degree of relief.

Over recent years my condition has deteriorated further with evidence of secondary pathological instability to other areas of my spine. I have been informed that my condition is causing other areas of my spine to compensate and these other areas are now directly contributing to my levels of pain and general disability. This has been confirmed on several occasions with investigations including MRI. My treatment regime of physiotherapy, medication and remedial exercises was not providing any sustainable relief.

My symptoms present as constant left sciatica with broad based pain across my lower back region. I have constant spasming in the middle of my back extending down to my lower back. I could only walk, with restricted gait and at a reduced pace as normal walking exacerbated the mid back region. Walking with any weight in my hands, coughing, sneezing or even normal rotation of my back whilst driving a car sets off my back with an increase in spasms in my middle and lower back regions. I cannot sit or stand for any period without my condition getting worse. I continue to suffer from sleep deprivation and have to get up several times each night and walk around because of the pain. In addition my personal hygiene has become increasingly difficult due to restricted flexibility and inability to rotate my spine.

I eventually heard about the Spinal Rehabilitation Group and thoroughly reviewed their website which assured me that perhaps their unique approach may offer me some form of relief. I commenced treatment after referral from my medical doctor and after 4-months, attending usually 2-sessions per week, I would describe my condition as having gone from acute to sub acute.

I am now sleeping reasonably well and the right side spasming has become intermittent and certainly not as intense. The constant sciatica and lower back pain has abated to a manageable degree and to a point that I can now predict the activities that will trigger an exacerbation. Coughing and sneezing no longer initiate any acute spasming. I am walking normally and also now able to walk with weighted objects in my hands without triggering an acute episode of pain. In fact I have taken the odd fast walk slow jog without the usual onset of acute pain!

I am hopeful that continued treatment will provide long term stability of my underlying spinal condition that will allow me to maintain a reasonable quality of life."  Alan Dawson
