HyperMED UPDATE  Brain Tumours, Spinal Cord Tumour, Stroke - D Frezza

This is an amazing story of young Daniel's determination and desperate quest to LIVE. Daniel's overwhelming changes have been as a result of 2.5 months of intensive Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy combined with appropriate strategies under the direction of the HyperMED

'Hi my name is Daniel Frezza, I'm 17-years old. Two and half years ago after suffering with terrible headaches, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour with extension into the upper part of my spinal cord. I was told I had a Chordoma in my brain which had wrapped itself around my spinal cord and attached itself to my bones. I was told the tumour had also melted away parts of my spinal cord.

I deteriorated rapidly at this stage and was admitted to hospital with mild paralysis and loss of feeling. The pain was incredible and within days an operation was performed. This operation was 9-hours in length.

Another operation was performed 3-weeks later as complications set in due to fluid on the brain. Another 3-operations were performed in an attempt to rectify the complications. After the third operation I suffered a stroke which left me blind, collapsed lungs and not able to walk or talk. Even after the first operation my headaches returned and eventually I was told the Chordoma was growing back!

I was told I was going to DIE - the Chordoma was incurable resistant to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The only other option given to me and my parents was from a specialist in the USA using a Proton Beam Therapy a very specialised form of radiation but my doctors said that the Chordoma was too big!

I was told at 15 "to go home and await death - your old enough to understand!" ... I was going to die ... read on

Breast Cancer; Secondary Stroke - Tyrikos

'After doing 52 hours of HBOT I have seen improvements as the following:

  • In my walking, I have control with my knee and I don’t seem to swing it out. Also, I am stable on my feet too.

  • My circulation of my left arm has improved.

  • It has reduced the spasticity in my fingers and at times I get shooting pains in my arms, legs and face (the effected side).

  • But I have been told it’s a good sign.

  • I am more alert

  • Typing with one hand is getting faster (I typed this report!)

  • My physiotherapist and I have seen improvements with my muscles. Eg: controlling and releasing them.

  • When I am exercising with my stepper I can do, without holding on to the wall for support.

  • My platelets have come down dramatically; my doctors can't explain why this happen!'

Progressive Multiple Sclerosis - Bertolusso

I was devastated when I was diagnosed with progressive MS. I have extensive lesions in my brain and down throughout my spinal cord. In addition, many of the blood tests confirmed the presence of infection. I am overwhelmed but happy that finally somebody has taken the time to listen to me and thoroughly investigate my condition. Even although I have a serious condition I am confident that this will hopefully make a difference!

  • I started treatment in the Hyperbaric chamber - the first couple of months I didn’t seem to notice any change in myself but as the hours increased I have noticed many improvements:

  • I am feeling less tired, I have more energy and I do not feel mentally as 'cloudy'.

  • I am not feeling a dizzy as before and my head feels a lot clearer.

  • My balance has improved and I am walking better.

  • I have noticed that I no longer experience tingling from my waist down to my knees. Their is also less tingling down my legs, they feel a lot stronger and I am walking more and more distances each day.

  • I have less back pain and my back and neck feel a lot more mobile.

  • Overall I am very happy with my progress.

Aggressive Brain Tumour - Neuroglioblastoma - Case Study

A young 24 year old male is referred with an aggressive brain tumour. At age 19-years he was initially diagnosed with an Ástrocytoma (brain tumour). The onset of his condition started when he returned home from work complaining of headaches. The headaches culminated and Steve suffered a Grand Mal seizure. Medical consultation followed by CT Scan investigations and biopsy confirmed the presence of a brain tumour.

He underwent radiation therapy which observed a reduction in the tumour size; subsequently his condition remained quite for the following 4-years. Suddenly his condition deteriorated and his seizure patterns recommenced. He underwent a series of chemotherapy programs but failed to improve. Eventually he and his family were informed that his condition had deteriorated and his condition classified as 'life threatening'. His family were informed that surgery was NOT an option as the tumour had spread to involve the entire half side of his brain and was spreading across the midline structures to the other side.

The family failed to simply give-up!

Before starting Hyperbaric Oxygenation he required assistance with virtually all aspects of his day to day living. Speech, cognitive function, right arm and right leg dysfunction, eating and even general hygiene all required support.

After 30-hours of HBOT Steve and his family report the following:

  • improved mental function - ability to concentrate, interact; previously Steve was always tired and falling asleep; now he is more active. Steve previously was always depressed, didn't want to talk and or interact; he now 'jokes' around all the time!

  • improved speech; does not slur his words as previous

  • improved walking and general mobility; he does not require as much support

  • ability to lift his right leg whilst lying down

  • improved independence; toilet and showering requirements

  • improved seizure patterns; prior to HBOT Steve was have numerous seizure patterns daily. These seizures have diminished dramatically and in fact was seizure free for 1.5 weeks. Seizures are more mild and he has the ability to control the seizure. This has enabled Steve to dramatically reduce the necessity for his seizure medication.

  • improved sensation and control of his right arm and right leg

He continues to have periods of 'good and bad' days. Seizures; when more severe DO impair his function and ability and it takes several days to recover and get back on track; HOWEVER overall he and family report a definite change in his clinical presentation. Obviously, these are early days and his condition IS an aggressive tumour!

Studies indicate that early intervention gives a more favourable outcome. It is our hope that HBOT will ultimately be recommended and used in the early stages of the disease when clinical diagnosis is first established; and NOT as a last attempt at a 'miraculous cure'.

Massive L5/S1 disc sequestration - 12.0mm prolapse; S1compression - K Timenshenko

Case Study: Mrs KT age 40 attended for second opinion. KT had a history of chronic back pain often involving her right leg (sciatica). A recent fall whilst roller blading caused her condition to suddenly deteriorate and she was now suffering chronic back and leg pain. Prior to her attending she had consulted numerous doctors and therapist; eventually KT was consulted a prominent Orthopaedic surgeon who  referred KT for an MRI and subsequently recommended immediate right sided laminectomy and L5/S1 discectomy.

MRI investigation confirmed an extensive (12.0mm) right sided L5/S1 disc prolapse with compression of the right S1 nerve root.

Aggressive HBOT coupled with appropriate medication and physical therapy was commenced in an attempt to stabilise the region. 6-weeks of INTENSIVE HBOT (approx 50-hours): her condition had stabilised. KT back pain was minimal and her leg pain virtually gone.

In fact KT returned to her beloved winter sport - snow skiing! KT maintained her HBOT and approx. 4-months after commencing Hyperbaric Oxygenation additional MRIs taken confirmed disc reduction.

KT continued pain free and her condition has remained stable enabling her to ski Europe during the Australian summer!

Cervical spinal stenosis - Myelopathy  - T Vaiano

'Two years ago I started to notice a change in temperature awareness in my left leg; then swelling and soreness in my right hand. Approx 12-months ago my right arm and hand was getting weaker and my right leg felt unusual when I attempted to run or place additional weight onto the right side of my body.

After a series of CT Scans and MRIs; I was eventually informed that I had advanced canal stenosis at the C4 to C7 levels in my neck. I was told the canal size had reduced significantly and that my spinal cord was compressed and in fact, my spinal cord had lost the 'normal' signal observed on the MRI. I was told that I required immediate surgery which would involve multilevel Cervical discectomy and anterior fusion. Obviously I was devastated!

I attended Dr Hooper for a second opinion. I had heard about Hyperbaric Oxygenation and felt that it was at least a reasonable option; in an attempt to stabilise my condition and minimise the urgency for surgery.

Within 4-weeks of intensive HBOT coupled with medication and physical therapy my condition has improved dramatically! By 8-weeks I have noticed considerable reduction in the chronic pain to my neck, arm and hand; improved movement in my neck and shoulder; virtually complete loss of numbness and tingling in my arm and hands'

HyperMED UPDATE

Dystonia Cerebral Palsy - M Tomic

'Madeline was born August 2000; after a long and difficult labour, Madeline had a low APGAR score (2) and required resuscitation.  CT Scan investigations at 2-years of age revealed generalised enlargement of both ventricles in the brain and generalised cerebral (brain) atrophy (wasting).

Our concerns as parents were raised at 14-months when her development appeared to be delayed and we noticed that her head circumference was on the smaller size for her age. Madeline crawls independently, able to pull herself up onto furniture however, her balance is poor; she has reduced speech and we battle with the issue that she constantly chokes when she swallows.

Both my husband and myself have been frustrated in an attempt to get a definitive diagnosis and through the internet we became aware of Hyperbaric Oxygenation and its possibilities in brain injury.

Madeline has received 2-courses of intensive HBOT. After her initial 4-weeks we noticed significant change with the most dramatic response being the complete stopping of her gagging when chewing food. I believe this is as a direct result of her HBOT because this has been an ongoing battle with Madeline and the fact that she improved so quickly and immediately after commencing HBOT'

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (History 4-years) - Da Costa

'After about twenty hours of HBOT I began to notice an improvement. I started having short periods where the heaviness and brain fog would actually lift almost completely. At these times I was able to think more clearly and I could do things without it being a big effort. I felt like I was waking up from a nightmare! It was such a relief to get a break from it sometimes and I began to believe that I might actually get well again. By 40-HBOT; these periods were much longer and much better. Everything didn’t seem overwhelming and I began to actually enjoy doing some things again. It was like a miracle, I had forgotten what that was like! I remember once I was playing music while I was doing some house work and I started dancing around the house. I suddenly realized what I was doing and stopped dead and laughed out loud, I couldn’t even remember the last time that I had done that. I even started writing again!'

Chronic Low Back and sciatica pain - L5/S1 Disc prolapse/sequestration - Thompson

'International skiing can be hard on your back! There are a few major accidents I have had in my time which are definitely contributing factors to the condition of my spine one of which resulted in me breaking both my wrists simultaneously after falling from about 20 – 30 feet  and landing directly on my tailbone, my wrists breaking the fall, at this point the damage to my spine was starting to manifest itself'

HyperMED UPDATE

Glioblastoma - Inoperable Brain Tumour

Dramatic Brain Tumour reduction after 160-hours of HBOT: prior to HBOT the tumour size measured 7.5/4.2/6.0cm; after HBOT tumour reduction 5.5/3.2/4.2cm!

Daniel aged 19 has inoperable brain cancer. Diagnosed in October 2002 surgery, chemo and radiation therapy has failed to slow this aggressive growth. Every attempt to improve his condition have been exhausted; eventually being told to go home!

Daniel has just commenced HBOT and is already showing positive signs. He has more energy, his headaches are less and his seizure pattern appears to be less intense and he is in more control.

HyperMED UPDATE

Cerebral Palsy - Global Cerebral Hypoxia

'Joshua required birth extraction and was born with an APGAR score of 1 requiring intubation for resuscitation. We were told that Joshua suffered 'hypoxia' which was later confirmed on MRI evidenced by generalised cerebral atrophy with significant loss of white matter (Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy). Joshua was also suffering 'sepsis' requiring respiratory support and continuing antibiotics for infection control.

Joshua's development has been slow. He is very hypotonic with poor control of his head, neck and trunk. Joshua also has increased tone and spasticity in his lower extremities.

Hyperbaric Therapy is not covered by Medicare and certainly, our doctors provided little supportive recommendation. Initially we attended for a 40-hour block of HBOT; the improvements and changes that we have observed with Joshua have been slow but have continued even after this initial course of treatment'.

HyperMED UPDATE

Acute Low Back and sciatica pain - L5/S1 Disc prolapse/sequestration

'Over the years I have suffered bouts of back pain and consulted numerous forms of treatment modalities all with varying success. Then, in late August 2002 after a weeks skiing suddenly I went into severe muscle spasm and could hardly walk at all.  This went on for around 2-3 weeks and I was conducting business on the floor of my living room and was having severe pain in the lower back and down the left leg through to my left foot, which was getting numb at times.  This was very concerning and quite stressful.

I had to take an unavoidable business trip interstate and being unable to sit I chose to stand up all the way on the flight, there and back.  Most of the time interstate I had to lay down as I was in pain and on pain killers and anti inflamatories.  It became the worst period of my life as I had to run a business, keep a family and at the same time suffer a lot of pain.  My wife was also having a hard time having to do almost everything around the house and with 4 children this was a burden and strain on the entire family.  I really was stressed and looked ill during all of this. I was told I required surgery but fortunately I came across Dr Mal Hooper'

HyperMED UPDATE

Quadriplegia - C5/6 dislocation - Sousa

A tragic horse riding accident left Anita a quadriplegic 2-years ago. Changes over the past 2-years have been minimal given the fact that she was diagnoses as a complete quadriplegic with absolutely no grounds for recovery.

How WRONG her doctors have been. Within 4-weeks of intensive HBOT combined with appropriate physical therapy, Anita has made some dramatic improvements.

HyperMED UPDATE

Acute spinal cord compression - C5/6 prolapse, acute spinal cord compressive  myelomalacia - GA

Inappropriate manipulation without proper investigation. Acute spinal cord syndrome required immediate acute hospitalisation and medical care. Surgical decompression and fusion was recommended however, the patient elected conservative treatment at HyperMED (Spinal Rehabilitation Group) with an excellent outcome without the requirement of surgical intervention.

Failed Back Surgery - L5/S1 Laminectomy, massive scar formation - M Gribble

'My back problems initially began whilst  I was wave jumping and I crashed into the water from about 15 feet high off the back-end of a wave. My back eventually settled but then another surfing accident occurred when I was 'dumped' head first into the sand. I felt a sudden electric shock run the entire length of my spine and for several seconds I thought I was paralysed!

After extensive X rays, my medical doctor told me I had fractured 3-vertebra in my back. My back never really improved and eventually a neurosurgeon performed a L5/S1 laminectomy and partial disc removal. 5-years later I still suffer chronic pain and I cannot stand or sit for any period of time.  I have exhausted all treatment options from chiros, physios, massage, acupuncture; I swim every day and even had several epidurals injections. Eventually my cousin told me about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Spinal Rehab. After 6-weeks intensive treatment I am virtually pain free, back at work and walking without a 'permanent' limp for the first time in years'

HyperMED UPDATE

Chronic Back Pain - L4/5 Advanced Canal Stenosis, degenerative Facet Joint cyst

'Mr AP. retired pharmacist has suffered a long history of chronic back pain subsequent to falling from a roof and breaking his right leg at the age of 13. This injury resulted in his right leg developing poorly with a residual shortened right leg requiring shoe elevation.

All treatment options have been thoroughly reviewed. Mr AP was finally advised that surgical fusion was indicated because of the advanced canal stenosis which is directly compressing his spinal cord and exiting nerves at this level. He was correctly advised that spinal fusion would not 'cure' his back pain; and in fact he may suffer additional pain due to the extensive procedure.

Fusion was advised because of the terribly unstable nature of his condition. He was informed that if he should suffer an injury or fall to his lower back, the impact and the fact of the unstable compression of his spinal cord could result in him becoming a paraplegic. 7-months after receiving Hyperbaric intervention his condition has improved dramatically (before and after MRI's).

HyperMED UPDATE

Advanced degeneration L4/5 disc - disc prolapse, nerve root compression- Case Study

'I suffered severe back pain unable to walk, sit and even trouble lying down. I had terrible sciatic pain down my right leg and crippling pain in my lower back.  It was impossible for me to conduct my normal business. Over the years I would visit various practitioners and doctors and eventually the pain would settle. On this occasion my back simply collapsed. MRI revealed an extremely degenerative and collapsed disc and in fact the options of surgery was discussed.'

Radiation Necrosis Bowel - Prostate cancer - J Vuillemain

'I am 66 years of age. In November 2000 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. When the Urologist told me that I had cancer, it was like a death sentence. More than 1-year after radiation therapy I am suffering from rectal bleeding with every bowel motion. All I want is for the rectal bleeding to stop. I have followed all advise from my treating doctors but nothing has been successful to date.

I heard Dr Hooper on radio talk-back. I have now had about 10-hours of Hyperbaric and my rectal bleeding has stopped'.

HyperMED UPDATE

Hypoxic Brain Injury - Drug overdosed - J Emery

'A couple of years ago I had a drug overdose and ended up with ‘hypoxic brain injury’. I had read of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a magazine article, which had described the benefits in stroke victims, helping to restore function and improve the overall rehabilitative progress. When I approached several of my neurologist and specialist doctors the concept of hyperbaric therapy was quickly dismissed and described as being ‘futile’, in fact one of my doctors went on to say that Dr Hooper was a ‘crook’!

HyperMED UPDATE

Stroke - Hemiplegia, speech loss - D Kennedy

'I was advised  ‘half his brain was gone’. I was devastated. My husband, my friend was completely incapable to maintain himself. He has lost his speech, he cannot walk and is confined to a wheelchair, he cannot communicate other than a vague nod for a yes or a no! In addition he has a bad leg shudder and he started taking fits.

Since starting treatments we have noticed that the shuddering of his legs had stopped! He has only had 2-fits since commencing HBOT. However, the biggest improvement has been the fact that Duncan is now more attentive to comments, directions, and questions and is certainly receptive. He can now look and hold a visual contact with you when you are talking to him. If you ask him a specific question he now responds with a clear and concise reaction'.

HyperMED UPDATE

Chronic Back Pain - A Dawson

'I’ve had back related problems for the past 30-years as a direct result of a severe fall. I have received an absolute multitude of treatments, opinions and specialist advice. I came across the Spinal Rehab website and was assured that perhaps they might offer some alternative. Its been 4-months since I commenced treatment'.

HyperMED UPDATE

Multiple Sclerosis - Chronic fatigue syndrome - A Scott

'HBOT was combined with a multidisciplinary approach that included vitamin injections, various forms of physical therapy including acupuncture and Rehab Plus. I have more energy, I am mentally alert, I am certainly not as tired, and my general immune system and response have improved dramatically. Recent MRIs have shown a reduction in the number of brain related lesions'.

HyperMED UPDATE

Diabetic Gangrene - Di Battista

'I am 71 years of age. I am a diabetic (type 2) and insulin dependent. Whilst overseas I developed a sore on my big toe. Eventually the condition deteriorated and I developed gangrene. My specialist vascular surgeon recommended that I have the toe amputated immediately; before the condition continue to spread up my leg.  Obviously I was very concerned.

I spoke to an acquaintance in Italy who also had a similar diabetic condition to my foot. He had saved his foot by having hyperbaric chamber treatment but my specialist was not supportive. I was eventually recommend Dr Hooper at the Spinal Rehabilitation Group and for the first time received some positive form of advice which included HBOT. I immediately started treatment'.

HyperMED UPDATE

Sexual Dysfunction: Chronic post-operative Back Pain - Impotency

'I’ve had back problems since I was about 21-years old. Eventually I was operated on at the age of 39 with a laminectomy and fusion of my lower back. My back was OK for a number of years then progressively deteriorated. Incidentally, I also noticed that I was experiencing impotence problems. At this stage I had absolutely no idea and neither had there ever been any suggestion that my impotency problems and my lower back condition were possibly related. MRI confirms significant scar formation around my spinal cord.

Since starting HBOT my back has improved significantly but in addition my impotency has improved. Obviously my condition is a blood flow problem and certainly HBOT has been influencing both conditions'.

Spinal Cord Injury: Paraplegia (Complete) - Jason Sleep

'On the 9th June 2001, I injured my back during a motor bike accident when I hit a tree. I was diagnosed as 'complete paraplegia' due to a compression fracture and dislocation of my L1 vertebra. I was told I would "never walk again".

I have now had about 20-hours of chamber sessions. I can now move the muscles in my thighs and calves. I have good feeling down to my knees...

I can now lift my knees to my chest whilst I am sitting in the spa. Initially after starting HBOT I was able to manage about 6- knee lifts but then I would be exhausted, now I can lift them over 70-80 times each!' - read on...

UPDATE - Jason is now able to 'walk' with calipers!

HyperMED UPDATE

Cerebral Palsy - Spastic Quadriplegia - Kasey Beatty

'Kasey is 12-months old. Kasey was an emergency caesarean birth and eventually we were told that she was 'severely brain damaged' and would be severely handicapped. After exhausting all forms of treatment approaches, notwithstanding our doctors' total non support towards Hyperbaric Therapy we commenced HBOT in Melbourne.

Within 12 sessions Kasey's seizures were 'completely gone'. Previously she had been suffering between 50-60 seizures a day!'

Brain Injury - 'Near Drowning' 14 years ago - Leih Diver

'Hi, my name is Pat Diver and this is my beautiful daughter, Leih who is 23 years of age. Leih, unfortunately suffered a 'near drowning' incident 14 years ago when she was only 8-years of age. Leih remained in a deep coma for the next 3-months. During the first week after the incident whilst in ICU, Leih suffered a cardiac arrest and developed pneumonia. I was told that Leih had probably suffered an epileptic fit causing her to drown and then immediately suffered a brain stem stroke whilst in the pool.

For the past 14-years Leih has remained the size of a child, severely brain damage and handicapped. Since starting HBOT, Leih has experienced significant reduction of spasms and contractures, reduction of pain, improved independent bowel action and amazingly - has DEVELOPED BREASTS and had her first MENSTRUAL PERIOD! I have been informed that the Hyperbaric is influencing the endocrine system in her brain that has been delayed.'

Chronic Back and Leg Pain - Advanced Spinal Stenosis - S Moore

'I have been suffering back pain since I was 16 years old after a fall fractured my coccyx. Over the many years, I have tried to live with constant back and leg pain. I have received years of physio and chiro treatments but my back continued to deteriorate.

At age 53, I was eventually diagnosed with 'degenerative spinal canal stenosis'. Other than decompressive surgery, the only other option was to try Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and treatment at the Spinal Rehabilitation Group. After 3-months, the results have been amazing!'

HyperMED UPDATE

Multiple Sclerosis - Case Study

'I am 38-years old and was officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1999 which has been progressive over recent years. I have now undertaken about 40-Hyperbaric sessions. Prior to HBOT I have suffered constant sensation abnormalities ranging from pins and needles in my feet, buttocks and lower abdomen, crushing sensations in my toes and my right foot. Bladder and sexual dysfunction, headaches ... since commencing HBOT these abnormal sensations and functions have improved dramatically ...'

8-year old with Chronic Osteomyelitis of the right Jaw - Katherine Fleming

'My daughter, Katherine is 8-years old. Her problem started when she consulted a 'school' dentist who said she required a filling in her tooth. After the filling, Katherine complained of severe pain in her jaw, headaches and continued to feel unwell. The tooth eventually died, was removed and finally complications including severe osteomyelitis of the jaw.

Over 2-years of chronic pain and consulting just about everyone, finally some form of relief has been obtained through Hyperbaric Medicine. Why does the Medicare for Hyperbaric Therapy in the 'acute osteomyelitis stage' but not 'chronic osteomyelitis stage'? However if the infected bone continues and the blood supply eventually collapses into 'osteo-necrosis'; then  Hyperbaric can be claimed against Medicare!'

Adult Cerebral Palsy, Ruptured Cervical Disc, Spinal Cord compression - Jason Stedwell

'I was born with Cerebral Palsy. I am 30-years old. For the past 10 years I have suffered problems with my neck and back attending chiros and physio regularly. The past 2-years my neck has been slowly deteriorating and then during the past 7-months my condition got very bad with terrible pains in my neck and down my left arm and hand. I had seen numerous chiros, physios, masseurs, doctors but my condition was continuing to get worse.

In fact my left arm was about half the size of my right arm and I was experiencing major pains just attempting to move my arm. Since my neck and shoulder problems, I had also noticed that my cerebral palsy was getting worse.

I noticed an article about Hyperbaric and the Spinal Rehab Group the success in treating one of their patients - a young cerebral palsy boy who was now able to walk. Finally out of desperation, I consulted Spinal Rehab. The first thing they did was send me for an MRI of my brain and full spinal cord.

I was told that I had an extremely large ruptured disc in my neck which was compressing and twisting my spinal cord and the exiting nerves. I was devastated. After 20 HBOT sessions I am amazed! My neck has improved but the most amazing impact is the significant difference the treatments have made on my Cerebral Palsy'.

Spinal Cord Injury - Quadriplegia - Peter Roefs

'A motor car accident in 1994; I fractured and dislocated my neck and completely compressed my spinal cord. I was classified by the insurance company as suffering 'permanent disability due to complete cervical cord severance - quadriplegia'. I have experienced no change or improvement for 6-years since my accident, until I started Hyperbaric. I am still told by my insurance doctors to not get my hopes up!

Severe Back Pain - Prolapsed L4/5 disc with Mycoplasma infection  - Scott Moore

'Severe back pain and leg pain progressively getting worse even with 6-months of chiros, physios, my local doctor and eventually referral to a specialist. I wasn't sleeping, constantly taking pain killers, couldn't sit or stand.

I was referred to Spinal Rehab and the first thing they arranged was an MRI of my back which revealed 3-damaged discs with the L4/5 disc ruptured. The next thing was blood tests which identified an underlying bacterial infection - Mycoplasma. Virtually immediately my pain levels dropped. Its been 3-months since starting HBOT and I am pain free.'

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Back Pain - Denise Brand

'I have suffered with chronic fatigue and back related problems for over 16 years. Having tried all forms of medical and alternative approaches, the big break through came when I started Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy which included being tested for 'Opportunistic Infections'. I have had a number of clinical tests including DNA-PCR testing which has identified my problem. I am now receiving specific anti viral medication as part of my rehab'.

'For over two years my lower back had been progressively deteriorating, finally I was living with agonising pain in my back and down my left leg. Eventually, I found myself increasingly debilitated with pain and ultimately, unable to work properly. I tried everything my reasoning mind could deal with. Medication, rest and swimming made no difference. I consulted Chiros, Physios, Naturopaths, Osteopaths and had massages etc. I just about exhausted every possible consideration in both Singapore and Australia attempting to avoid the inevitable - a back operation'

Two Knee replacements, Delayed Wound Healing, Vascular insufficiency - Opportunistic Infection - Robyn Brock

'A series of car accidents impacting into my knees resulted in ongoing problems with both of my legs and knees. Repeated wound breakdown, extremely sensitive skin breakdown, infected ulcers and extensive swelling in both legs - I was told that I had significant vascular compromise.

As a last resort, I was recommended Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at Spinal Rehab. My Orthopedic Surgeon told me, "If this doesn't work, you will probably require an amputation".

Spinal Cord Injury - Quadriplegia - Julie Kent

A motor car accident caused a C5/6 dislocation and spinal cord compression resulting in quadriplegia with only partial limited movement of her shoulders and upper arms. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and physical therapy was commenced initially daily. Julie began to experience improvement with both bladder and bowel function within 6-chamber sessions.

By the 8th session, Julie reports movement response of her toes and reduction of a pressure sore on her foot that had not healed for several months. In addition, she reports a sensation under her rib cage and the feeling of her stomach muscles contracting. She states that she is now able to ‘breathe more easily and exert a cough’. Julie also reports improvement with movement of both her fingers and thumb - eventually being able to hold a pen and sign her name!'

Arterial graft break-down, Arterial Collapse and Delayed Wound Healing - Broberg

'Ten years chronic obstructive blood flow with circulatory problems ranging from triple coronary by-pass to inadequate blood flow (PVD) into both legs. A series of leg arterial by-pass and graft replacements eventually complicated with significant wound breakdown and delayed healing at the surgical site.' X-Treme Sports - Jeremy Bacon

'Skiing at both national and international levels resulted in my back progressively deteriorating. But, when your super fit, you think that your invincible and any injury will eventually heal.  By the time my back had completely collapsed, I had just about been to everyone. Being told that I required spinal surgery, motivated me to try at least one last option - HyperMED!'

Delayed Wound Healing - Ulcer following ankle joint replacement  - Morris Brown

Total ankle joint replacement resulted in wound break-down. The wound opened in the central area due to venous stasis ulceration with secondary infection. Referred by his Orthopedic Surgeon, Morris received a short burst of 6 HBOT sessions with excellent results.

Chronic Leg Ulcer complicated by Cellulitis - Mable Ridd

84-year old Mable reports 'I cut my ankle whilst closing a fly screen door. The cut continued to deteriorate and turned into an ulcer. Daily wound dressings and antibiotics did not resolve the ulcer. My leg and ankle worsened eventually developing cellulitis which was extremely painful and swollen. I was recommended to attend Dr Hooper. This was physically very difficult for me, because I have several hours of travel by car each way to Melbourne to receive treatment...'

Cerebral Palsy - Spastic Diplegia - Flynn Cummins

'My son Flynn is 2. He was born 13-weeks premature. Flynn suffered 3-major haemorrhages within his head. This resulted in severe Hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). 4-operations later, Flynn can only move around by crawling on his belly with a stiff rigid left leg dragging behind him and a stiff left arm. We have now completed 22 HBOT sessions, Flynn is also taking an amino acid and vitamin preparation, practicing a cross crawling technique and using his TENS machine on 'motor' points - all under the direction and supervision of Dr Hooper. Flynn's changes have been subtle.

His left arm and leg have relaxed and he is now able to bend much more easily. The high tone has in fact - decreased. But by far the most promising progress for us is that Flynn has started to initiate bending his left leg whilst crawling.  But we are still employing the wait and see approach.. "Cautious Optimism".

Chronic Lower Back Pain - Shalekoff

'I have been suffering chronic back pain on and off over 10-years as a result of a motor car accident. My back has deteriorated over recent years and become progressively worse.  I have tried a number of different treatments, but a friend suggested the Spinal Rehabilitation Group and their unique approach using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Totally frustrated, I decided to try.

The first thing that Dr Hooper organised was an MRI of my lower back. No-one had ever suggested an MRI. The MRI revealed a large prolapsed disc at my L4/5 level compressing my spinal cord and exiting nerves. Blood test also revealed the presence of glandular fever symptoms were still in my system. Virtually from the first session my back settled. It has now been 7-months and my back is about 95% improved.'

Chronic Back Pain - why you should MRI! - Davies

Case Study: Long history of chronic back and leg pains. Episodes of acute back and sciatic leg pains which generally settled to a dull constant stiffness across the lower spine region. Numerous visits to chiros and physios over the years failed to improve his condition.

Finally, his doctor refers him to an Orthopedic Surgeon who recommends 'decompressive surgery and possible fusion.' Eventually, referral to Spinal Rehab Group - MRI's before and after demonstrate the dramatic impact of 3-months intensive treatment using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy'.

Chronic Neck Pain, Fatigue and Diarrhoea - Parker

Celebrated Australian 'CATS' performer, Sarah developed chronic neck pain complicated by chronic fatigue symptoms, nausea and gastric problems including chronic diarrhoea. Sarah's injury developed during vigorous dancing routines progressively deteriorating with ongoing performances. Numerous treating doctors, physios and chiros gave minimal relief, unfortunately her condition was getting worse. Virtually all practitioners she consulted had a different interpretation and opinion about her condition, ranging from muscular fatigue, neck strain, to aspects of her condition being 'in her head'.

Frustrated with the lack of resolve, Sarah was ultimately forced to cease her passion; she was devastated. Eventually referred for MRI and blood tests her condition was finally diagnosed - read on ... (great photos of Sarah performing!)
